
Southern University has no reason to hold their heads down. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana School went into the NCAA tournament with a record of 23-10 and were 22 point underdogs against the number one ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Jaguars gave the nation’s No. 1 team a run for their money and had the score tied with under four minutes left, but came up six points short at the end.
With almost pulling off the upset, Southern showed the grind and grit that schools in the SWAC play with, but they are often looked over. For the next few seasons, the top schools will have to take notice and not ignore these smaller programs because, soon, history will be made and one of the Davids that have the 16th seed will defeat one of the top rated Goliaths in March.
